Position Description:

POSITION SUMMARY: The Adaptive Physical Education Teacher is responsible for day-to-day management of the Adaptive Physical Education Program and provision of instruction, including development and implementation of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and assessment in area of responsibility. The APE teacher is also responsible for the supervision of direct care staff when assigned to the APE program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Overall Responsibilities: •Design and carry out developmentally appropriate, motivating adaptive physical education programming as warranted through IEP goals. •Guide assigned staff in implementing goals of children. •Provide direct individual and/or group instruction. •Provide trans-disciplinary programming through consultation with professional and therapeutic staff. •Conduct evaluations necessary for quarterly progress reports, annual assessment and reevaluations. •Daily maintenance of supplies, equipment, and departmental space. •Organize daily schedule to meet caseload requirements and uses indirect time appropriately. •Consult with staff in other discipline areas to improve programming. •Facilitate ongoing parent contact and encourage family involvement. •Provide assistance with toileting. •Develop appropriate individual IEP consistent with Center training in a timely way.

QUALIFICATIONS: •Able to interact in a personal and professional manner in order that the physical education program functions in the best possible way so that quality care is provided. •Demonstrate good problem-solving and organizational skills. •Demonstrate communication and collaboration skills with supervisors, peers, clients and families. •Able to work collaboratively with school districts and outside agencies around the needs of students. •Able to support and educate parents in the area of physical education.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: •Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in physical education or related field. •Certification as a physical education teacher or eligible for DESE waiver. •Knowledge in the area of developmental disabilities. •Familiar with motor assessment tools. •Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing the provision of special education and the special education process.
