FULL-TIME ACADEMIC COUNSELOR: CAREER PLANNING AND ADVISING CENTER (Haverhill/Lawrence Campus) 37.5 hours/week as follows: Monday – Thursday (Varying hours) and Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm. The primary role of this position is to provide academic guidance/advising including admissions, career and basic financial aid counseling to students and potential students. The person in this position will also occasionally rotate to the Lawrence campus when the need arises. This position will also be expected to serve as the Web Advisor and will be the primary person responsible for delivering academic advising in a synchronous mode to current students, former students, as well as prospective students. Having a strong knowledge of other services available on campus, serving as an advocate for students, as well as orienting and referring students to all other services offered by the college will be fundamental to this position. Provide students with all levels of academic advising using the “Developmental Model of Advising” to guide students through the entire process of the advising continuum including transfer advising. Work with all students to prepare and develop Academic and Career Plans using DegreeWorks. As the Web Advisor, this person must have strong customer service skills, critical thinking skills, good decision making skills and the ability to guide and train others. Assist in advising students in the One Stop Centers through the admissions process, applicable workshops including career planning, advising and registration processes. Assist the Dean in facilitating advising training workshops for faculty and staff, and conduct research. Develop, improve, and market Web Advising to increase usage. Participate in classroom presentations, related projects, and collaborate with grant-funded staff to implement advising tracking systems for grant participants. Work in collaboration with the various Enrollment Services staff to provide NECC students and visitors with quality customer service.
Master’s degree (conferred) in Counseling, related Social Sciences, or Higher Education areas with a minimum of three years of academic advising experience required, preferably in a community college setting. At least two years using a secured “Live Chat” software in an academic or career advising role required. Must possess the ability to multi-task in a highly fast-paced environment as well as meet deadlines in a timely manner. Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills required. Demonstrated knowledge of the Internet, Microsoft Office 2007 and SCT Banner Information Systems or comparable student file system required.
Demonstrated sensitivity to the special needs of first generation, disadvantaged students, and non-traditional students preferred. Established ability to contribute positively to, a diverse, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural student population and campus environment. Bi-lingual individuals, fluent in both Spanish and English.
