Outdoor Sports Guide
Location: Tucson, AZ
The Outdoor Sports Guide position is hourly, nonexempt, commissioned when applicable, and non-supervisory. Guides are primarily responsible for the safety and enjoyment of guests participating in Canyon Ranch hikes and bike rides. The position is supervised by the Manager of Outdoor Sports, and in the absence of the Manager, by the Outdoor Sports Administrator or Biking Coordinator. Outdoor Sports Guides must be willing to take direction from Senior Guides and the Manager as part of the training and instruction period to learn trails and to gain an understanding of Department Operations. Guides at all times present a positive and professional image to staff and guests and adhere to Canyon Ranch standards for guest service.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Does pre-event preparation.
Instructs guests in proper operation of bicycles, safe and efficient cycling techniques and proper hiking techniques.
Operates a 15-passenger van, at times pulling a large bike trailer
Lead and tail guides maintain ongoing communication via radio; periodically regroups guests in order to effectively and safely manage group experience.
Does post-event cleanup of packs and vans; returns equipment, keys, etc. Completes closing procedures.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Completes Occurrence Report as needed.
Assists guests in checking out bicycles for their personal use.
Refers guest problems or complaints to supervisor according to Canyon Ranch Guest Problem Resolution policy.
Reports and documents any observed or known safety hazards, conditions, or unsafe practices and procedures to management immediately.
Performs other job-related duties as directed.
Participates in training for additional Outdoor Specialty Activities.
Must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent life experience.
Must attend the required number of training modules provided by Human Resources and the Outdoor Sports Department in first aid, natural history, and problem solving.
Must obtain CPR and First Aid certification within one month of employment and maintain current certification.
Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license with no moving violations for the previous three years.
Must be 21 years of age or older.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Must be physically able to lead or tail a minimum of three hikes per week over rocky and steep terrain.
Must have a good sense of direction and an ability to follow hiking trails in the wilderness or bike routes on metropolitan streets. Must be able to commit to memory at least three dozen hiking or biking trails, including trailheads, trail forks, intersections, regroup points, meal stops, turnaround points, points of natural or historical interest, and other details.
Must be able to carry a backpack weighing approximately 25 pounds on hikes ranging from 4 to 22 miles, and at durations of 2 to 8 hours at elevation gains from 300 ft. to 5000 ft.
Must be able to ride a bike at least 15 miles carrying 10 pounds of equipment, including hills such as Sabino Canyon or Mt. Lemmon Highway.
