To coordinate and deliver Therapeutic Recreation services for patients on the inpatient rehabilitation unit at Strong Hospital. This includes screening, planning and implementing appropriate Therapeutic Recreation services to facilitate the rehabilitation and discharge of patients referred by a physician.
Independently screen and treat all inpatients referred by MD. This includes but not limited to treatment, leisure education, and recreation participation and community re-entry.
Consult with other professionals to promote the greatest degree of independent functioning possible within the patients’ capabilities.
Participate in discharge planning by recommending appropriate leisure activities, community resources, modifications and adaptive equipment to promote health and wellness.
Provide proper documentation of activities including screening and progress reports for team report.
Participate fully in competency program.
Supervise affiliating RT students and volunteers as assigned.
Share in the responsibility of keeping lounge(s) safe, clean and inviting to patients and families to support participation in the therapeutic recreation program.
Orientation of new staff.
Provides leadership in resolving unit issues that relate to TR. Addresses continuous improvement, long range planning, and proactive problem-solving.
Establishes monthly calendar of activities and individualized patient treatment plans to achieve a balance between leisure education, community re-entry, and therapeutic activities.
Advocates for TR in regard to departmental resource distribution and assumes consultative role both intra and inter departmentally.
Ensures compliance of TR practice to CARF, JCAHO, and NY Dept of Health standards.
Maintains TR equipment and supplies.
Maintains network of community contact and resources
Provides in-service training to RT staff and other professionals as needed.
Participates responsibly in the supervisory relationship.
Explains to patient and family the role of RT in the Rehab process in words appropriate to their level of understanding.
Increase awareness and knowledge of RT through reading, discussions with staff and others, plus attendance and participation in in-services.
BS/BA in Therapeutic Recreation or BS/BA in Recreation and Leisure Studies with a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation preferred but not required. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (National Council for therapeutic Recreation Certification) preferred but not required. Experience in Rehab setting preferred.
