Office of Housing & Residence Life
With supervision and assistance from the Director of Housing and Residence Life, the Resident Director is responsible for the educational and administrative functions outlined in this job description. It is expected that these should lead to the creation of a community in the residence hall, which is conducive to growth, learning, and meaningful interpersonal relationships. Experience in working with people and the ability to relate positively with college students is essential. Experience and leadership in a residence hall or similar setting is necessary. Specific skills should include the ability to facilitate programming and other related residence hall topics which will contribute to the personal growth and development of the residents. Advising students in the course of their academic discipline and commitment to the development of the students is expected of each Resident Director.
General Tasks & Duties
1. Encourage an environment that fosters independent and responsible decision making on the part of all residents.
2. Provide opportunities for leadership experience to all residents and work closely with hall government and residence staff in particular.
3. Sponsor workshops in a variety of topics related to the development of students and also to enhance the safety of the building i.e. C.P.R., first aid, rape awareness, etc.
4. Provide advising and counseling as needed, relative to academic, personal and social concerns.
5. Oversee and assist each Resident Assistant with the development and implementation of at least three educational programs per semester to be presented to the RAs floor, or open to the entire residence hall.
6. Supervise and coordinate the college’s study hours in the residence hall. This includes supervising study sessions and also assisting students in a tutorial fashion when needed.
7. Conduct staff evaluations each semester designed to provide positive feedback and constructive criticism to all Resident Assistants.
8. Utilize existing on-campus resources, i.e. faculty and administration, in an effort to involve them in the residence hall community.
9. Responsible for the enforcement of all college policies as stated in the Student Handbook and the Resident Contract.
10. Develop and coordinate a viable and representative governing body (Hall Senate) to provide educational, social and recreational activities for the residence hall.
11. Conduct weekly Resident Assistant staff meetings and attend weekly Resident Director meetings.
12. Participate in the Resident Assistant and Resident Director selection process.
13. Submit all paperwork promptly and efficiently to the Residence Life Office as requested. This will include: Student Information Sheets, Incident Reports, Fire Drill Reports, Damage Reports, Room and Lounge Inspection Reports, Room Contracts, Housing Rosters, Budget Requests and other material as needed.
14. Function as the Resident Director “on duty” for the entire campus during assigned weekends.
Contractual arrangements for the academic year, mid-August through May 31, will include a stipend of $5,000 for Directors and $4,000 for Assistant Directors and tuition waiver for 24 credit hours per year. Resident Directors are also eligible to participate in the food service supervision program, which provides a meal ticket for the dining hall. A rent-free furnished apartment in the assigned residence hall is provided and Directors and Assistant Director are required to live in the apartment for the duration of their contract. Any additional commitment in the form of coaching or other tasks must be approved by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.
The Resident Director position is viewed as a graduate fellowship and he/she is entitled to a quasi-faculty status and may participate in faculty meetings, etc. The Office of Residence Life views each Director as a professional educator in higher education. Resident Directors report directly to the Director of Housing and Residence life and are evaluated by him.
The Assistant/Resident Director is responsible for assuring the successful functioning of the residence hall as an educational environment consistent with the academic and educational mission of the college The Resident Director is the immediate supervisor; in buildings where an Assistant Resident Director is hired duties may be shared.
The Resident Director has many duties to assure the proper functioning of his/her building. Goals of the Resident Director include but are not limited to: Promoting the development of a community environment within the residence halls characterized by consideration, respect and appreciation of others, the promotion of the development of an environment conducive to academic endeavors and achievement, and the development of an environment conducive to student involvement and participation. The Resident Director should encourage the development of students’ leadership skills and assist students, whenever possible, to identify and work toward attaining personal and academic goals. It is the responsibility of the Resident Director to foster the operations and maintenance of the physical facilities for the comfort, health and safety of all residents.
ROLES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE RESIDENT DIRECTOR
1. Assist the Director of Residence Life in the selecting, training, and evaluating of Resident Assistants and other student employees in the halls.
2. Assist in promoting and developing management procedures and practices that preserve and enhance the physical plant.
3. Maintain records and provide assistance as needed/assigned by the Housing and Residence Life staff.
4. Assist the Department of Housing and Residence Life in opening and closing the hall at the beginning and end of the academic year, and during periods of academic recess.
5. Compile operation reports as requested by the Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life.
6. Communicate, explain and enforce procedures, rules and regulations of the college with regard to residents and staff.
7. Assist the Judicial Dean in the sanctioning of student incidents, meeting with students, and assuming designated roles in the judicial process.
8. Attend and participate in RA training workshops.
9. Be available to residents of the building and department staff.
10. Develop and implement two programs per semester in the designated area of assignment.
B. STUDENT DEVELOPMENT
1. Initiate and maintain activities of student development.
2. In conjunction with Resident Assistants, work with residents on individual development issues and make referrals as appropriate.
3. Provide assistance to students in developing their interests and abilities.
4. Work with staff and residents to develop community in the hall and on individual floors.
5. Advise hall government and subgroups, and help coordinate the efforts of hall government and student staff toward achieving specific residence hall objectives.
6. Attend to your hall budget, making sure that it is accurate and up to date.
1. Assume on-duty responsibilities for the campus as described by the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
2. Initiate and maintain effective communication with other members of the Division of Student Affairs in implementing departmental and divisional objectives.
3. Attend weekly departmental staff meeting. The Resident Director should attend these meetings prepared to take notes, and share the information at your staff meeting.
4. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Housing & Residence Life or designee.
