Athletics Compliance Officer/Assistant Academic Advisor
The Compliance Officer/Assistant Academic Advisor for the Athletics department will have dual responsibilities between serving as the NCAA Compliance Officer and serving as the Assistant Academic Advisor for student athletes.
The Compliance Officer/Assistant Academic Advisor will also: oversee NCAA compliance for 18 varsity sports teams, student athletes, coaches, athletics staff and all appropriate university personnel; monitor NCAA mandated requirements, including length of playing and practice season, coaches NCAA rules examination, mandatory day off, etc.; ensure that departmental and student-athlete paperwork and office operations are in compliance with NCAA requirements; ensure that the university's athletics programs governing recruiting, amateurism, awards and benefits, playing and practice seasons, and sports camps and clinics are in compliance with NCAA rules and regulations; develop and conduct NCCA rules educational sessions for coaches, student-athletes, alumni and athletic boosters; ensure and monitor compliance; produce the compliance educational component for staff within the Division of Athletics and university partners; remain knowledgeable and up-to-date on all NCAA rules and changes to legislation; represent UMass Boston at NCAA mandated events; maintain the NCAA on-line compliance system; prepare weekly, quarterly and yearly compliance reports; assist with monitoring the satisfactory academic progress of student-athletes pursuant to NCAA rules and regulations; monitor the recruitment and hiring of coaches through reference checking and review of NCAA website; provide academic support and counseling for student athletes in assigned sports; monitor assigned student athletes' academic performance and assist all assigned student athletes with academic and career development; work with coaches, academic advisors and other university personnel to facilitate the academic success of assigned student athletes; distribute mid-semester grade reports to the faculty to note class attendance and academic progress of student athletes; provide accurate and timely information to the Director of Student Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) and coaching staff on matters pertaining to assigned student athletes; maintain all active and inactive files on assigned student athletes; assist in data collection and prepare and distribute reports; and other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree in Business, Sports Administration and/or Management or a closely related field, Master's Degree preferred, and a minimum of three-five years of previous collegiate experience in coaching and/or administration required.
Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA eligibility rules and regulations and familiarity with the compliance process is required.
Ability to work evenings and/or weekends, as necessary, is required.
Experience in counseling and/or advising collegiate student athletes preferred. Knowledge of current student development theory and research is preferred.
Knowledge of software applications, including office software and database management;
Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with individuals from various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds;
Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential information with discretion;
Ability to effectively and efficiently work in a team capacity with a broad range of staff to accomplish departmental and program goals;
Ability to work under pressure and under timeframes;
Ability to handle multiple projects at the same time;
Ability to prepare written reports, correspondence and recommendations;
Ability to supervise the work of work-study students;
Demonstrated organizational ability and strong attention to detail;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
