This is a seasonal position, 32hr/wk, from the end of May through the end of August.
The Holyoke Youth Conservation Corps is one of six crews of The Trustees Youth Conservation Corps (TYCC) run across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Trustees Youth Conservation Corps Program aims to offer high-quality, paid, seasonal employment and educational opportunities to youth. The program is designed to provide young people with experience in a variety of conservation activities and inspire them to become life-long stewards of their local communities.
The Trustees are looking for a qualified Youth Conservation Corps Supervisor. The Holyoke Youth Conservation Corps (HYCC) is a summer work and educational experience for Holyoke teenagers ages 15-17. The program focuses on the care and management of natural areas, the development of cooperation and leadership skills, and education about the natural and cultural resources of Holyoke and Western Massachusetts. This year the Corp’s program will focus on work projects in Holyoke with some work trips in other parts of the state. The program includes one overnight camping trip. Work projects may include trail-building, invasive species removal, park clean-ups, and urban gardening. Combined with leading these work projects, the Supervisor will be responsible for delivering some enrichment programming and being a positive environmental and professional role model. The Youth Conservation Corps Supervisor is a part-time seasonal staff member with the responsibility for the on-the-ground management of the Youth Corps program and the oversight of the Youth Corps members.
The Youth Conservation Corps Supervisor reports to the Holyoke Education Coordinator and will work closely with the Regional Engagement Manager, CT River Valley Superintendent, the Administrative Assistant, and other staff.
•Work with Trustees staff, the CT River Valley Superintendent, and local partners to create an 8-week work and enrichment schedule for the crew. Maintain a shared work calendar throughout the summer.
•Manage HYCC members by: overseeing safety of the teens at all times, ensuring the completion of work projects, motivating the team, leading educational programs, and facilitating teambuilding exercises.
•Provide supervision and coordination for one overnight camping trip and several recreational excursions.
•Enforce HYCC code of conduct and work with the assistance of the Holyoke Education Coordinator to resolve behavior conflicts.
•Coordinate projects with staff and project partners.
•Transport youth in a van from the office to work and recreation sites.
•Maintain supplies and equipment throughout the summer.
•Provide regular safety education and ensure safe use of tools and safe practices in all outdoor activities.
•Serve as a Trustees ambassador during any interface with the public.
Abilities, Skills, Qualifications
•Must be able to work independently and unsupervised.
•Must have experience working successfully with teenage youth in an outdoor environment.
•Must have some experience with environmental stewardship work (trail building, landscaping, ecological restoration work, or other experience).
•Experience with conflict management and team-building preferred.
•Must be able to handle the physical demands of the job, which is carried out outside in a variety of weather conditions.
•Must be flexible and able to undertake a variety of tasks.
•Leadership experience is desired and candidate should be able to show success in working with and building a team.
•Some knowledge of natural history, environmental topics, or ecology preferred.
•Certified in first aid & CPR prior to the start of the field season.
•Spanish proficiency preferred.
•Must submit to CORI and SORI background checks.
•Must have a valid driver’s license, submit to a driving check, and meet the requirements of Trustees driving policy.
The position is based out of the Holyoke office, but work may take place all over Western MA (transportation expenses provided). The position pays $13-15/hr, corresponding to relevant experience, and provides for worker’s compensation.
