Assistant Fitness Director
HealthFitness has a great opportunity for a Fitness Program Coordinator at our client site located in Cambridge, MA. This premier program consists of 150,000 sq ft facility complete with two floors of fitness activity space housing over 40 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, two full lines of strength equipment, free weight room, squash courts, multi-activity court and is connected to 3 additional athletic facilities housing multiple gymnasiums, an indoor track and ice rink. Serving an eligible population of 15,000+, this program incorporates comprehensive fitness and recreational programming all into one facility.
SUMMARY: The Assistant Fitness Director is directly responsible for Zesiger Fitness Center supervision, fitness instruction, equipment maintenance and repair at Wang and Zesiger Centers, direction of personal training and massage programs, and direction of Health Fitness staff within the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center. Other responsibilities include: directly supporting the fitness floor staff (75% of time on fitness center floor); recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, evaluating and other personnel management duties; managing daily operations of fitness center and responding to patron needs. Assist in the management of facility operations, rentals and special events.
JOB ACCOUNTABILITY (Duties & Responsibilities): Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, evaluate, and related administrative duties for, fitness center par time staff, personal trainers and massage therapists. Develop and implement policies and procedures for personal training, fitness orientations and fitness assessments and train clients as needed. Develop and implement MIT Recreational Sports policies and procedures. Addresses patron concerns and questions involving Zesiger Fitness Center or programs taking place within the Fitness Center. Directly supervise bulletin board projects and fitness staff assignments. Directly manage personal training and massage program budget. Directly manage Zesiger Fitness Center operational budget. Assist with the development of annual program and event schedule, goals, and budget forecasts. Assist in soliciting and scheduling health talks and seminars. Assist with development and implementation of fitness incentive programs, free/low cost workshops, campus programs, and milestone events. Conduct program and event evaluations by creating and distributing surveys and collecting data. Update and distribute operational and promotional materials and assist in maintaining program and marketing information at Zesiger Sports & Fitness Center. Responsible for purchases, security, and inventory of massage and fitness testing equipment. Responsible for Zesiger and Wang fitness center equipment inventory including cleaning, record keeping, repair and preventative maintenance, developing proposals on liquidation and purchasing, and management of the equipment preventative maintenance contract. Maintains visibility and a positive customer service image on the fitness center floor, by dedicating a minimum of 75% (30 hours per week) of all working hours to floor coverage and supervision. Open/Close building as assigned, serve as POC and conduct related administrative duties. Assist in week/weekend facility programs and events at both Alumni Pool & Wang Fitness Center and the Zesiger Center. Assist in facility coverage at the Zesiger and Wang centers as needed. Serve on the MIT Recreational Sports Health and Safety Committee for the Fitness department. Develop agendas and lead quarterly staff meetings for personal trainers and fitness staff. Attend and actively contribute in staff meetings for: Recreational Sports management, Fitness team, Health and Safety Committee, and Individual fitness meetings. Other duties as assigned by the Fitness Director.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s Degree in exercise science, health education, sport management or related discipline required. Master's degree preferred. 2-5+ years experience in leading a Personal training program and overall fitness center management of personnel and equipment. Personal Training certification from ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NSCA or NASM required. Current CPR for Professional Rescuer with AED and First Aid Certifications required. Strong knowledge in the area of health, fitness, and fitness programming. Computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills, and quality customer service skills. Experience with public speaking/education classes, research and statistics classes preferred.
