Salary: $195 per week stipend
Location: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Patuxent Research Refuge, Laurel, Maryland
Dates of employment: Runs February 25, 2013 – June 28, 2013
Qualifications:Must have well-developed communication skills and leadership ability and be able to work independently and as part of a team; experience collecting biological data in the field preferred. Bachelor’s degree (or pursuing) in wildlife management, natural resources, or related field, and field work experience desired. Must have a valid driver’s license. Must have personal vehicle, though a vehicle will be provided for official duties.
Duties: Intern works closely with a team of biologists to assist with waterbird surveys, wood duck and other avian production monitoring programs. Hens and young may be banded. Intern will assist biologists with impoundment maintenance and invasive plant species control on the refuge. Other responsibilities include data entry and analysis. Intern will have opportunities to participate in other Refuge surveys, including frog calling, woodcock and whippoorwill, and vegetation surveys. Must interact effectively with staff and volunteers to assure quality data is collected. On rare occasions, intern may be required to assist with various visitor services at the Visitor Contact Station. Dormitory housing is provided, if needed. Work schedule will be standard Monday through Friday with federal holidays off.
