Research Asst.-Pulmonary Infections

Position Description:

Position Summary The primary purpose of this position is to help the lab make progress toward its experimental goals. This work will focus on understanding the biology of pulmonary infections with a specific emphasis on bacterial infection following infection with influenza virus. The research assistant works closely with senior staff to carry out research in the areas of immunology and infection biology. The research assistant provides technical assistance, coordinates laboratory research according to established laboratory protocols, and supervises and trains lab aids.

The research assistant will initially receive experimental training from the supervisor and laboratory personnel, but it is expected that the research assistant will grow into a position of some independence with regards to carrying out experimental protocols and overseeing laboratory maintenance. Some aspects of the work involve handling of hazardous materials. Dependability, productivity, and self-motivation are necessary assets. Also, the research assistant must have the desire and ability to think critically and solve problems.

This is a one year position with possibility for renewal and is anticipated to start July 1, 2013. Job Qualifications -Education: Must have a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or related science (grade 7). Bachelor's degree with 1-2 years relevant laboratory experience (grade 8) or equivalent combination of education and experience. -Technical: Must have basic knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of molecular biology and cell culture. -Experience within the field of Immunology preferred but not required. Must be willing to work with mice as an experimental model. Must be willing to work with infectious organisms. -Teamwork: Must be willing and able to provide technical support to laboratory personnel. -Organizational: Must see to maintenance and organization of laboratory research activities. -Interpersonal: Must interact well with other laboratory personnel, with members of the University community, and with outside vendors.
