SHS San Diego Campus Receives
Outstanding Community Involvement Award

"Small businesses recognized at awards luncheon, by Tiffany Stecker, The Daily Transcript, Friday, May 19, 2006 - - -
Small business leaders across the county gathered at the downtown Marriott Friday to celebrate the achievements of small business leaders in San Diego County. The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, along with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), teamed up to present awards to outstanding small and micro companies in San Diego.

George Chamberlin, executive editor of The Daily Transcript, hosted the event and presented the San Diego chamber awards. The chamber awards included Emerging Business of the Year, Most Innovative Product or Marketing, Excellence in Customer Service and Outstanding Community Involvement for both small and micro businesses. Additionally, the chamber awarded one Arts, Business and Culture Award and the North Island Credit Union Excellence in the Work Environment Award.

This year's SBA awards, presented by SBA Regional Director Ruben Garcia, recognized the achievements of: Small Business Person, Tony Saadat of Electronic Online Systems International; Young Entrepreneur, Dennis Caco of Autocannon Inc.; Women-Owned Small Business Person, Julie Brown of the San Diego Insurance Staffing and the Insurance Training Academy; Family-Owned Small Business Person, Kurt I. Honold and family of Burgers and Beer; Minority Small Business Champion, Daniel Scott III; Small Business Financial Services Champion, Eric Eng of Cairns, Eng, Applegate LLP; and Veteran Small Business Champion, Aaron Ellison of Human Systems Development.

Garcia also presented the Delores Braswell Award to Terri L. Fraser of Fraser & Associates for advocating women in business, and the Small Business Prime Contractors. Subcontractors of the Year awards went to: John Lyons of Solute Consulting and Dutch Perry of North Park Trophy as prime contractors; and Laurie Freeman of Cal West Products, Thai Nguyen of Hi-Tech Electronic Manufacturing and Allen Ronk of Secure Communication Systems as subcontractors. Advecor Inc. and Classics for Kids won the Emerging Business Award for small and micro businesses, respectively.

Bay City Television Inc. (Fox 6/TV 13) and Adrienne Moch/Writing & Editing won for Most Innovative Product or Marketing. Bay City was chosen for its Couch Potato viewer loyalty program, which provides codes and trivia answers for viewers to win prizes. Local sales manager for Bay City, Lynda DiLorenzo, credits the program's success to General Manager Richard Doutre Jones. "He was looking ahead in the future four years ago," she said.

The winners of the Excellence in Customer Service Award were Select Mailing Services Inc. and Military Home Programs Inc. "We keep ourselves very educated within the industry," said Ellie Faudoa, president of Select Mailing Services, which provides mailing and postal services for several businesses, including Lindbergh Field.

Four businesses (two small and two micro) took home awards for the Outstanding Community Involvement Award: Second Chance, Springfield College, School of Human Services-San Diego, Herr Photography, and Kids Included Together.

Scott Silverman, executive director for Second Chance, attributed the award to the social services organization's high job retention rate for its economically disadvantaged clients. "We have an 80 percent placement retention. That statistic in its own right is significant," he said. Christopher Weil & Company Inc., an investment advisory group, won the Arts, Business and Culture Award. The North Island Credit Union Excellence in the Work Environment Award went to Interactivate Inc., a marketing agency. "We are very aggressive about integrative programs, (getting) feedback from employees, adding benefits for employees," said Jack Abbott, CEO and founder of Interactivate.

San Diego's Business Improvement Districts also recognized their neighborhoods' outstanding businesses: Joe Banuelos of Tortilleria Lily in City Heights; Jackie Connelly of Woodstock's Pizza in the CollegeArea; Miguel Gonzales of Hill Steam Cleaning Service in the Diamond District; Heather Mitchell of the School of Healing Arts in Pacific Beach; Ron Diemling of the House of Blues Downtown; Jay Levine of PIP Printing in El Cajon; Mikki Neal of the Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery in the Gaslamp District; Michelle Burkart of THINKbusiness in Hillcrest; Steven Atlas of the FrameMaker in Mission Hills; Rick Dieterle of the Bean Bar Coffee House in North Bay; Claire Magner of Claire de Lune in North Park; Cordelia Mendoza of Cottage Antiques in Ocean Beach; Jill Mesaros of Miracle Theatre Productions in Old Town; Michael Ullman of the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla; and Roberto Lopez of Hermanos Lopez Inc. in San Ysidro."
