Katherine Post Selected as One of 16 Leadership Fellows Participating in a Leadership
Mentoring Program

Katherine M. Post, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, has been selected as one of 16 leadership fellows participating in a leadership mentoring program jointly sponsored by The American Occupational Therapy Foundation and the American Occupational Therapy Association. Post will be traveling to Denver, Colo. in January and again in September 2010, with a series of online meetings in between, to engage in personal reflection, written assignments, and case studies focused on building leadership skills and knowledge. According to the sponsors, the 10-month program “is especially designed for individuals with leadership responsibility in accredited occupational therapy educational programs. The fellowships are intended for applicants who are enthusiastic about advancing their academic careers, who want to more effectively address their challenging administrative and programmatic responsibilities, and who wish to assume increased leadership roles within their professional, academic, and civic communities.” Post is professor and chair of the Occupational Therapy Department at Springfield College.

OT, PT, and RHDS Departments Sponsor “The Role of the Related Service Provider in Inclusive School Settings” Conference

The Springfield College occupational therapy, physical therapy, and rehabilitation and disabilities studies departments were proud to sponsor “The Role of the Related Service Provider in Inclusive School Settings” conference on December 4 and 5, 2009. The Springfield College School of Health Sciences and Rehabilitation Studies co-sponsored the event with Baystate Medical Center and Holyoke Community College. It was held at the Kittredge Center, Holyoke Community College. The purpose of this two-day conference was to clarify the role of a related service provider in public schools, provide methods that will facilitate student participation in inclusive settings, and learn how to use collaboration to provide meaningful help for students and teachers. The conference was attended by approximately sixty students, teachers, and occupational therapists from Massachusetts. The guest speakers, Jan Hollenbeck, June Bunch, and Sharon Ray, are experts on the most current trends and best practices for related services in schools. Deborah Cook Selected to Present Her Research at the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) Annual Meeting

Deborah Cook, assistant professor of rehabilitation and disabilities studies, was selected to present her research at the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) Annual Meeting. This year, the meeting was held November 19-21 in New Orleans, La. Professor Cook presented on three posters. The poster entitled "R U Textually Active? Text Messaging Perceptions and Practices" was coauthored by three seniors in the communications disorders program based on a Scholars in Action Day project presented in March 2009. The students were Jaclyn Connors, Karah Heald, and Lauren Fahey. The two other posters presented were "Infusing Information Literacy Throughout The Undergraduate Curriculum: The Process" and "Sign Language Storyreading for Children who are Deaf."

PASO to Sponsor a Bone Marrow Drive on Wednesday, December 2, in Schoo-Bemis Foyer

The Physician Assistant Student Organization (PASO) is sponsoring a Bone Marrow Drive on Wednesday, December 2, from 2-6 p.m. in the Schoo-Bemis Foyer. The event is coordinated by the Be The Match Foundation, which helps to get people on the bone marrow registry. The process takes about fifteen minutes, and involves some paperwork and a mouth swab. The Department of Physical Therapy hosted Dr. Lawrence P. Cahalin as the 2009 Greene Memorial Lecturer in Physical Therapy on October 29

In honor of National Physical Therapy Month, the Springfield College Department of Physical Therapy hosted Lawrence P. Cahalin, PT, Ph.D., CCS, as the 2009 Greene Memorial Lecturer in Physical Therapy on October 29. Dr. Cahalin's lecture was entitled “The Perfect Collision of Physical Therapy Education, Practice & Research – The Case Report.” Dr. Cahalin is an American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) board-certified cardiopulmonary specialist and has been actively involved in clinical research and clinical practice in cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy for over twenty-five years. Dr. Cahalin is currently a clinical professor in the physical therapy department at Northeastern University and is completing the second edition of his textbook entitled Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy: An Evidence-Based Approach.

J. Patrick Decoteau presented at the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals 2009 Forensic Conference

J. Patrick Decoteau , Ph.D., CRC/LRC, professor of rehabilitation and disability studies, recently presented in Memphis, Tennessee at the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals 2009 Forensic Conference. Dr. Decoteau’s general session with over 300 attendees was entitled, 2010 CRCC Code of Professional Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors: Implications for Private Sector Practitioners. Dr. Decoteau currently serves the organization as a member of its Executive Committee and Board of Directors. In addition, in his position as Secretary/Treasurer to the IARP Board, he chairs the Finance Committee and is a founding member of the Case Management Section Board of Directors.

J. Patrick Decoteau recently opened the New England Chapter of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals Fall 2009 Annual Conference

J. Patrick Decoteau, Ph.D., professor of rehabilitation and disability studies and president of the New England Chapter of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals, recently opened the organization’s Fall 2009 Annual Conference at Liberty Mutual Group’s Dover, N.H., campus. The day-long conference included presentations on topics such as “Overcoming Work-Related Obstacles for those with Vision Impairments,” “Functional Bio-Feedback to Facilitate Return-to-Work,” and “Job Modification for Persistent Upper-Extremity Tendonitis—A Computer Workstation Case Study.”

Physician Assistant Graduates Score 100% Pass Rate

For the third time in four years, graduates from the Springfield College Physician Assistant Master’s program have had a 100% first-time pass rate for the Physician Assistant National Certification Examination (PANCE). This exam is administered by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and qualifies students for state licensure. The national first-time pass rate for 2009 is 93%, making this an outstanding accomplishment for SC graduates.

Katherine Post, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of the Occupational Therapy department, recently published two articles: Higher Education as Occupation: The Role of OT Practitioners in Supporting Students' Participation in College Learning Environments in the July 13, 2009 issue of OT Practice magazine, and Advancing Your Knowledge and Skills in Assistive Technology in the September 2009 issue of the Technology Special Interest Section Quarterly.
