St. Johnsbury Campus, Springfield College School of Human Services to Award Yellow Ribbon Scholarships to Veterans
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt., Aug. 20, 2009 Scholarship help for local military veterans increased today when the Springfield College School of Human Services St. Johnsbury Campus announced that it has joined The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program.
The campus will award tuition scholarships to veterans on a first come first serve basis who apply for admission and qualify for acceptance into the school’s bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will provide matching scholarships.
Veterans are eligible who have served 36 months of active duty after September 10, 2001, or who have been honorably discharged for a service-connected disability when serving 30 continuous days after that date. Also eligible are dependents of veterans who qualify for transfer entitlement under the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
The Yellow Ribbon Program is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 which pays up to the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition and fees. It also allows institutions of higher learning with tuition that exceeds the highest public in-state rate to award scholarships of up to 50 percent of the amount above the in-state rate, which the VA will match.
Like the School of Human Services programs in 10 other cities across the nation, the degree programs at the St. Johnsbury Campus build the leadership skills of human services professionals while they continue serving their communities. A hallmark of the school’s education is that students identify a community need and design and implement a project to address it. Such projects are usually done in partnership with community organizations.
Most students complete their degrees in 16 to 24 months. The school accepts transfer credits from other regionally accredited institutions of higher learning. There is also a process for undergraduate students to claim academic credits for college-level learning gained through life and work/military experience.

Springfield College, founded in Springfield, Mass. in 1885, is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and the undergraduate program of its School of Human Services is accredited by the Council for Standards in Human Services Education.
